Best Note-Taking Apps - A Definitive Guide

The best note-taking app will depend on your needs and situation. This guide lists the many note-taking apps currently available in an organized way.

Note-taking app by default implies that they are the digital equivalent of notebooks or pen and paper.  Still, it is important to highlight some very important requirements of a note-taking app before we dive into the actual tools.

Because we are talking digital version of notes, we expect and a bit more from these apps.  So, it would be helpful to define some basic requirements of a digital note-taking solution.

In this guide, we look at apps that have these basic features that make a digital version of notes more useful.

Must have features of a note-taking app

  1. Search - Being the digital equivalent means this is a given, but it is still essential to highlight that this is still a feature.

  2. Categorization - Again, being a digital solution, this should be the main benefit we can extract.

  3. Online Access - haha, I know!  Yes, there are some note-taking solutions that only stay on your device and would be considered a feature for those who want that extra protection of their content.

In order to make this guide as useful as possible, I have organized the content by needs and by situation.

Some 'note-taking' software in here are more full-fledged specialized software programs than others and would be considered focused writing and or document management apps.  I am including them here as again the best note-taking app will depend on your needs.

For example, the first chapter is a comprehensive list of all the apps available in no particular order.  Just adding them to the list as I find them.  This list of note-taking software products will improve as I add new ones over time.
